Does anyone else think that the timing of the Ashton Pankey transfer request is odd? Why announce now and not a few months back? There are my questions that come to mind. Has he failed drug tests like fellow teammates? I sure hope not. I myself have another spin on the situation. I think that another PF player has been on the MD campus and Turge thinks he will join the team soon.
Here is why.... For 2012 MD would have 5 post players (Cleare, Len, Padge, Pankey, & Mitchell). Of those 5, Pankey would be the first forward off the bench to begin with (Len & Padge starting - no questions about that). In 2013 Padge will be gone and depending on how Len plays in 2012, he could be gone as well. That leaves Pankey, Cleare, & Mitchell. Smotrycz will join the team but he is a stretch 4 and ultimately will spend time on the wing to create a larger line up. So why leave?
Well how about we throw into the mix Volodymtr Gerun a 6'9 PF from UKR. The kid averaged 18 ppg & 11 rpg in the euro mens championship in 2011. He was in Division A as well. Volodymyr was rumored to have been on campus late last week/weekend. Adding a player like that to the 2012 class, a player that Turge recruited and viewed to be a new asset to the team might push a player to transfer. Thats my take on the situation.
Here is some info on Volodymyr:

I've missed you and your good news Charlotte!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks man. I took a new job and its in sales/recruiting so my time at work is a little bit thin to blog. I dont have a computer at home yet and blogging on the iphone sucks. I am buying a laptop this weekend so I should be back in action shortly
DeleteI am 100% with you on this Charlotte....no way Pankey backs out now without MT having something up his sleeve.
ReplyDelete-Does anyone know when we officially added Len last year? Just to get the timeline of how late in the summer this news could realistically break.
-Volodymyr is a fucking awesome name.
-NMPrisons responded with a simple "Len 2.0" to a comment I posted earlier...makes me think there is something to this. Where there is smoke there is fire.
Sign me up for this dude, even if he has to sit out 10 games.
Looks like the Len news officially came on August 29, so obviously a ton of time left for this (or someone else) to materialize for 2012:

The Ukraine pipeline is going full force! If one goes way back on TT, I was talking about Int'l players being more common for certain more internationally based Universities like MD and St. John's. i will not be surprised to see a Chinese born player plucked by MD in the years to come.
DeleteVlad is 6'9", but it doesn't look like he weighs more than 175.
DeleteBTW - to be clear - this IS the same Volodymyr from last season, the one Turge "never heard of." lmao
ReplyDeletethis would be pretty sweet. and never saw the blog before charlotte, well done.
ReplyDeletethanks man. I gotta give credit to DJ and Bball as well. We are trying to have it be a solid source for recruiting. I have a few things lined up for the future. John Gilchrist has reached out so I might see if I can get an interview with him or some quotes. Mitchell and I are becoming close as well. Currently thinking about how MD can celebrate after dunks. Want something similar to the Darius Miles and Q Richardson head bumps.
DeleteAmazing how Twitter and other SM sites have changed the game...direct access to these guys is not too far away, especially if you have a platform like this site.
DeleteAnother interesting option could be Roscoe Smith. MD has not been connected with him but he could play the "I want to be closer to home" card as well as the UCONN sanctions card. I would think he would instantly become a starter for MD at the SF/Wing position. He has two years left and would be an ideal fit for our roster.
ReplyDeleteSomething is definitely coming... Roscoe would be my #1 choice but Vlad would be good also.
DeleteOh for sure. Roscoe would be ideal. I havent heard MD, but then again I havent really heard he is active at all. He could be evaluating all options at the moment. I cant think of a better situation for him though.
DeleteCount me in on the Roscoe bandwagon. Would be a great fit as an athletic 3/4. We could create matchup problems galore in 13-14 with him, Layman, and Smo.
DeleteWoops just realized I wasn't signed in when I wrote that....I would be very happy with Volodymyr as well. Looks like he can ball.
DeleteRoscoe...The same roscoe that has awful decision making??? No thanks, he is linked with UNLV and SMU anyway so you're wrong about him not being active
ReplyDeleteAgree. Also, Pankey, as a freshman, put up comparable (very slightly better) numbers in the same amount of playing time as Roscoe Smith did as a sophomore. Don't see what the gain would be.
ReplyDeleteIt's not just about numbers. If you watched the 2011 tournament you saw a guy who was playing at a high level (as a freshman) in the tournament and won a championship. He was a starter on a championship team.
DeleteThe only reason AP saw time this past season was because there was simply no other option. He wasn't held accountable for his mistakes and was gifted playing time that in other years he would've had to earn.
Personally, I think Pankey is a solid player, and would have been a good player in the coming years. But with our current group of players, with space eaters like Shaq and Mitchell, a guy like Roscoe with his inside/outside game would be a very good complement. I have watched a good deal of Uconn basketball and have seen Roscoe play a lot. Their team this past season was a trainwreck, and I'm not going to put too much merit into the stats that players on that team put up. I just know from the eye test, that Roscoe is a good player that could definitely contribute to this Maryland team.
DeleteYou're comparing apples to oranges. Roscoe is a wing player, not a post player like Pankey. We're thin at the 1-3 this year (5 scholarship players) and could definitely use Roscoe even if he came in 2013.
DeleteWow the site blew up today! Good looking Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check some Vlad videos before I make a conclusion. Is he really only 175??
I'm looking at his weight. The latest is from last summer so let's assume he has added some weight.
DeleteThe sight did blow up. Over 1300 views today and 1000 hits for this article.
We have some some more ideas in the pipeline
Wow! Check out this board post from the University of Rhode Island back in January. Hurley's coach now, and he might be pushing too for all we know...

Volodymyr Gerun ('94) from Ukraine has got many NCAA offers. Las week was supposedly on Maryland campus.
LOL three guys on his team have the same name. That is more V's and Z's than I have ever seen!

Watched Canarius take on a strong Notre Dame Prep team today and come up short but they have some good players. Their top recruit is 7"3" Boris Bojanovsky from Slovakia. With all the top schools that have already offered and more to come, he's probably way beyond Maine's reach, but there are some other names that I will throw out that maybe we can keep an eye on. I know they have attracted interest and some offers but I don't know their status or relationship with Leichner.
Oskars Reinfelds, 6'4" guard from Latvia.
Aleksej Rostovs, 6'9" forward from Latvia
Viktor Juricek, 6'10" forward from Slovakia
Volodymyr Gerun, 6'8" forward from Ukraine
Carlos Novas, 6'6" guard/forward from Austria
Shane Hammink, 6'6" small forward from the Netherlands
Simon Krajovic, 6'1" guard from Slovakia
Bojanovsky was definitely the cream of the crop but if he goes to any major program, according to the analysts, he will have to redshirt and put on weight and muscle.
BB Purist note: Canaris is not yet known for producing High D1 talent - yet. Program needs to be built up

ReplyDeleteUsed that money translator to figure out what this spanish author wrote about the Len-Gerun Connection. May put it on main post if good....
DeleteOnly you would make an entire comment that I can't read. Why not just post the translated version. Nuts!
DeleteYes - I got rid of it! Meant to do it last night when I was playing around with the Translator. It was worth a post due to this writer's perspective.
DeleteHe's any of this even been mentioned on TT!?? Either I missed it or they area behind the ball.
ReplyDeleteNada.
DeleteA French Euro bball recruiting blogger reported Gerun supposedly on campus as well.
TT is slipping..
ReplyDeleteWhat do we really know about this guy? The video shows very little IMO. Has one decent post move.
I might have missed it but DBR says we're showing interest in Marcus Derrickson
ReplyDelete6'7 230 2015 Paul VI Team Takeover
lol Volodymyr Gerun. For the love of god dude do some research, this kid is not coming to Maryland and has never been a Maryland target. TerrapinTimes erroneously reported that he was on campus and waiting to be cleared (it was Alex Len) last year. Mark Turgeon was asked about him specifically by Jeff Barker and said that he had never heard of the kid. Unless it's the coincidence of the century, you're just picking back up on a bad rumor from around this time last year.
