Evan Smotrycz - What number he will wear

Evan posted on twitter that he was changing his handle to reflect his new number.  He decided he was going to change his number from #23 to #3.  Hours later he decided to change from #3 to #1.  There was quite a lot of traffic about him possibly wearing #3, given that it was Juan's number.  I personally don't have any objection to it.  If the number isn't retired then it's fair game in my book.

That brings up a question though.  Is the number in fact retired?

If it isn't retired, I wish he would have stuck with #3.  I think that would have shown a ton of balls.  He basically would be saying that "Yea I know a legend use to rock #3.  Dont worry, I am going to come in here and start my own legacy."

  1. Should of stuck with #3, show some balls!

On a side note for this, I think I caused a bit of a panic when I read Bens RT of this, as it seriously appeared as if Smotrycz pulled back his commitment if you casually read over it through the twitter home page. My bad! haha.

    1. haha. Na I knew what was going on. Evan is already talking to players about when he will be on campus, including Abner Logan. He isn't going anywhere. I think he will turn into a fan favorite. Get ready for NKM part 2.

    2. If he's even half of NCM then we're in for some solid, legendary soundbytes! I'm with you DJ, thought sticking with #3 would have been a decent idea although I'd love to see one of those Harrison's don the number in 2013-14

  2. Maryland men's basketball numbers do not get retired, just "honored"; however, they're honored along with the players' names. Thus, John Lucas and johnny Rhodes are both honored as #15.

It is like that for a lot of teams. As most know, jerseys are hung in the rafters or placed on the facade of Byrd Stadium, but never retired.

On the other hand, I believe women's basketball has some retired numbers, such as Vicki Bullett's #25 - don't know why, but hers and I think one or two others are fwiw...more current players are now honored.

    1. If it was retired then how did Marissa Coleman wear 25#?

    2. Great question - I'm not sure why they give retired status on the UMD website. There are only 3 or 4 "retired" - not sure about the story - I'm a men's bball guy - ha ha ha

  3. Derrick brings up an interesting theory. And I know we all love theories! Saving #3 and #0 for Aaron and Andrew??? Hmmm
Hopefully this posts. I've been having trouble with linking my accounts, therefore the lack of posts.

    1. interesting.... I've seen Aaron and Andrew wearing a slew of different numbers for their teams (#5, #7 in the past). I think they just wanna lift up a school and team back up to the top and become legends, numbers be damned :)
