New 2013 Target (Guard) - Jon Severe

This was first reported by Therecruitscoop.  It appears that the staff is watching Jon Severe tomorrow.

Following Jon Severe's Dayton & Cincinnati offers, Maryland will watch the 2012 Long Island Lightning (NY) SG workout on Wednesday.

I don't have a lot of time at work today but I figured I would fill you in on the latest MD potential recruit.  Meet Jon Severe.  He plays on the same team as Uconn's Omar Calhoun and some have gone so far as to say he is the best player on that team.  That is saying something considering that Calhoun is a top 50 player in 2012 and has been invited to a few of the showcases.

**Rivals says he is 2013 while Therecruitscoop says 2012.  I am thinking this was a typo.

I am still gathering info on this kid.  It appears he had an injury that forced him to miss significant time which is why he is undervalued.

Coming off an injury, the progress of Jon Severe was supposed to be slow. After tying a school-record with eight made 3-pointers, some college coaches are beginning to consider him as the best player on his loaded team.

A 2013 6-foot-3 combo guard from Christ the King in New York, Severe has emerged as arguably the best player on a team featuring UConn signee Omar Calhoun, top-100 point guard Isaiah Lewis and talented role player Jordan Fuchs, among others. One D1 assistant coach believes he may be the best player on the team – not potentially – but right now.
Severe has an excellent shot and can shoot from range. He can dribble well, but needs to improve on that if he wants to have the ball in his hands more often. Severe has the ability to drive to the basket and finish in traffic. He is also a strong defender, who continues to get better in all aspects of his game. The New York native has developed his game into a much more compete ball player, as opposed to just a shooter.

After being hurt over the summer, along with the season before that, Severe has had an unlucky history with injuries. At the same time, he is finally having his breakout year during his junior season. Because of this, the Christ the King star is now hearing from plenty of schools. He has offers from, “Houston, Xavier and Drexel,” with interest from, “Providence, Texas, Rutgers and Florida.” There are a number of other schools who are exploring the option of getting involved as his stock seems to rise every game.

Rivals has him as a 3 star with offers from Cincy, Xavier, Seton Hall, etc.

Clip from a NYC article:

That’s exactly what happened on Sunday night as Lewis was able to find Jon Severe (27 points) and Calhoun (22 points) open all night long en route to a 79-67 Christ the King (7-3, 3-0) victory over Xaverian (8-2, 2-1) in Queens in our ESPN New York Game of the Week.

Looks like Turge is after another shooter.  Good news is that he has qualified.
What do you guys think?  What really catches my attention is that he is overshadowing Omar Calhoun, which is no small task.  I love big city guards and it appears that this kid can flat out score.  He has good size at 6'3 as well.  The injury thing kind of worries me, but at the same time it offers an opportunity for MD.  We can get good value on Jon.  Without the injuries we could be looking at a 4 star guard.

  1. Turgeon is all over scoring, but I'm not sure that I like the approach of attempting to solve every single problem in one class. This comes down to scholarship management over how good the player is.

That being said, he appears to be legit if he can shake the injury bug. Another combo guard (it must be the school, MD has an infatuation with combo guards it seems), but this guy seems to have a solid shot and ok handle. Good backup to SCJ I suppose, or perhaps Turgeon isn't banking on SCJ coming or doesn't want to wait.

I'll read more into him this afternoon when the boss is out for the day and give a better look. On the surface it appears to be a spectacular late season find, and I guess I'll be ok with it since Turgeon appears to be hell bent on getting a seventh person, and I only feel slightly better because Smotrycz is technically 2011 and Dodd is a probable redshirt.

  3. Crap. Definately a 2013 guy. I'll update after lunch. Guess this has now turned into another option behind the twins, Jordan, pookie, and Robinson.

    2. It's ok, you can blame Alex Kline from Recruit Scoop for messing up the tweet calling him a 2012 SG.

  4. I know about Severe since Lavin's had him in his sights earlier. Here's some comments from SJ's posters/NY writers who are commenting on him the past 3 months....

A great 3 point shooter (31-71), but not very good in 2 pointers (43-113).

"Severe has to be able to somewhat defend his position at this Big East level and if he can't, he will get abused.

I know we (SJ's - editor) play mostly zone but a guy who is not a good athlete can be exposed even more in zone if he can't rotate and close out quickly."

  5. Recruiting side note: billy donovan to coach the
USA 18 year old team over the summer. It consists of college Frosh and HS seniors. They mention what you're thinking: It will give him a recruiting edge by being around the top players more.

  6. Since this seems to work for a bball recruiting thread, Boheim is out watching Tyler Ennis currently. I know MD hasn't been really hardcore about Ennis, but having 'Cuse out there isn't going to help matters.

Severe seems to be a solid option behind Stan Robinson by the way. I still think I want Stan, but Severe would be a great backup option. How many guards have we offered in 2013 now? It has to be a ridiculous number.

Personally for 2013, I think I'd rather have Jordan and Robinson for the stability, but I obviously can't say no to the Harrisons. It seems as if Turge is building in a ton of backup options though, and they're quality options at that.

    1. Jordan is cocky as hell. He was named MVP of some tourney he was in this week and he dropped 30 points last night. He tweeted something along the lines of "Shout Out to myself for being named MVP." Im not saying this is a bad thing or if it even impacts the way I view him as a player.

More and more as I hear about his ability to score, I wonder if this is the PURE PG that a lot of people seem to think he is. I think we looking at more of a Grevis type PG. Obviously not a bad thing at all. In terms of PURE PG's, I beleive our best options are Pookie and Andrew Harrison.

    2. I don't think he is a Pure PG, but I think Turgeon feels that he can make him one. I think if you want to compare to GV though, he is coming in more polished at the position than he did. GV matured into a good PG in his junior and senior seasons.

You're right that Pookie and Andrew are probably the most pure PGs we're after. Jordan has a lot better offensive game to him than those two do, and Peters has played as a scoring PG his entire HS career (averaged like 20 something a game, 5rb, 5as.). He plays in the public school leagues though so not the big recognition of playing in the Catholic league in DC.
